Abstract
Purpose

Only adequate supportive therapy enables successful, specific cancer therapy. It treats and prevents complications of cancer therapy and the disease.

Physicians and other professional groups as well as the affected patients can be supported in medical decisions through formally agreed, clearly understandable and comprehensible recommendations. The aim is a comprehensive implementation of a multidisciplinary, quality-assured and cross-sector care of the oncological patient in the areas of supportive therapy, the systematic consideration of the recommendations in education, training and further education and quality management systems, as well as the systematic consideration of the recommendations and the quality indicators derived from them e.g for certification procedures of oncological centers.

The guideline for Supportive Therapy creates the basis for content-specific medical training and further education measures and thus an improvement or optimization of care according to the motto of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) "Supportive Care makes excellent Cancer Care possible" achieved.
